Transglossic Fiction

What comes after postmodernism?

This is the central question of my latest collaborative research project with Dr Kristian Shaw from the University of Lincoln. A provocative response to the idea of 'post-postmodernisms', the term transglossic means 'speaking across' and refers to the use of both form and theme in contemporary fiction as part of the renewed place of the author as a public intellectual. Challenging the recourse to the modern as a limiting factor in contemporary literary criticism, we argue instead that a radical redirection in terminology is needed to properly harness the potential of this shift.

In our article in English Studies (2021), Kristian and I outline the six core features of transglossic fictions. Since then, we have been refining the underpinning ideas of the theory through dialogues with global academic audiences. We have presented the theory in Canada, France, Germany, and the UK, and have forthcoming engagements in the USA. This work will lead to a major monograph to be published in 2025.
